Analysis of Water Temperature of Laguna Lake Using the EFDC Model

HydrodynamicsWater Quality

Overview

Laguna Lake is one of the widely used freshwater sources in Metropolitan Manila and continuously receives large amounts of pollutants from domestic, industrial, and other sources. While numerous studies have addressed water quality monitoring of the lake, its water temperature — which affects most of the chemical and biological characteristics of water — has not been given as much attention. This study focused on characterizing that temperature.

Model Setup

The hydrodynamic characteristics of the lake were considered in producing a graphical illustration of Laguna Lake’s temperature using the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC).

Key Findings

Laguna Lake is thermally unstratified, with an average depth of 3.21 m and a mean temperature range from 25 °C to 29 °C. The EFDC model developed in this study could be further used to model hydrodynamic transport and be linked with the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP).
