Challenges with Extreme Weather Events
Extreme weather events such as flooding, hurricanes and storm surge put extra pressure on coastal defenses and adjoining regions. Forecasting and warning services for natural disasters can help save lives but often require installation of flood forecasting and warning systems, along with decision support systems.
Solutions Provided by EEMS
EFDC+ accurately models fresh and saline water interactions in estuaries and river systems allowing users to develop well calibrated models of their systems and evaluate the impacts of predicted climatic changes. In turn, EFDC+ may be modified to support flood forecasting systems in real-time systems.
Examples of Studies Done with EEMS
Nam Gnouang Dam Failure Hydraulic Analysis for Emergency Response Plan (Laos)
EE was used to perform a hydrodynamic modeling study of the Nam Hai-Upper Nam Hinboun and the Lower Nam Hinboun. This work was part of a larger assessment study of the Nam Hai-Upper Nam Hinboun river system in support of the Technical Feasibility Study for the Theun Hinboun Expansion Project. The objective was to conduct a study of the incremental impacts due to an existing hydropower facility and a proposed expansion on the downstream channel. Flooding and channel stability were evaluated and engineering analysis conducted. The flood conditions for the Mean Annual Flood for 10, 20, 50 and 100 Year return intervals were analyzed. A 2D Floodplain model was built and calibrated. This model allowed the assessment of flood durations, flood extents and flood depths and compared for each desired flood event and THPP operational scenario.
Hue, Vietnam Flash Flood Warning System, Vietnam
EFDC+ was used in a Flash Flood Warning system. The objective of the project was to develop an Alert Flash Flood Warning System for Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam. The project involved the procurement, installation of computers systems and meteorological measurement tools, and training for the Emergency Management personal responsible for flood warning and mitigation for the province.
